Every time there is a high-fatality or sensational incident in Jammu & Kashmir – however infrequent such incidents have now become – every device to whip up hysteria is exploited by radical political formations, both on the Islamist and Hindutva extremes, abetted by increasingly dishonest sections of media and partisan trolls on social media.
The targeted killing of four non-Muslims – a Sikh school principal and a Hindu teacher in the same school on October 7, as well as a Kashmiri Pandit pharmacy owner and a Bihari migrant worker on October 5 – has once again fuelled frenetic commentary about ‘escalation’, a ‘return to the 1990s’ and Kashmiri Pandit ‘exodus.’
